One of the best gamepads in the current generation of consoles is Sony's PlayStation 4's DualShock 4 control. The fantastic news: Owners of a DS4 controller can use it for almost all gamepad-ready Windows games. The bad: Unlike Microsoft's Xbox One gamepads, preparing the PS4 controller on a PC requires a bit more effort, at least in regards to wireless use. But do not worry, we'll demonstrate how you can play your favorite games using all the PlayStation controller. Incidentally, this also works with both the older DualShock 4 controller and the revised version released in 2016 using the PlayStation 4 Guru.

Probably the simplest choice to use the DualShock 4 controller on the PC is the usage of a conventional USB cable. Not only can the DualShock 4 control be billed through the micro USB port, but it may also be joined to the PC like any other USB device. Windows 10 recognizes the gamepad within a few seconds and you can use it. Especially in newer games or in the Big-Picture interface of Steam, you can now use the PS4 controller instantly. But in many cases, you need an additional installation using a tool such as DS4Windows - more about that below.

Whether through cable or Bluetooth: You will discover that the usage of this PS4 controller on the PC in many games is not possible or just faulty. The reason: Microsoft employs the Xinput port on Windows to connect game controls. Most games, therefore, call for a Xinput-compatible Gamecotnroller, like the Xbox One or Xbox 360 gamepads. Sony officially does not encourage Xinput, which explains the reason why the PS4 controller is not recognized by games like FIFA 19. That does not matter! Several programs jump into the breach. Probably the best is that the free program DS4Windows, The open source tool trickles Windows into believing that the connected PS4 controller is an Xbox gamepad. This works with both the wired and the Bluetooth variant. In practice, this usually means you could control virtually all controller-compatible Windows games using the DualShock 4 control.
